Joey Dosik Hits A “Game Winner” At Bangers For SXSW THOUGHTS+PHOTOS: JOEY DOSIK @ BANGER'S | SXSW 3/14/18
AUSTIN, TX- For most of our SXSW artist coverage, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. We have over 80 artists to cover, so cut us some slack! 😉 We’ll basically be formatting each post into two parts: (1) Why our contributor wanted to see this act and (2) what our contributor thought of the performance”. Easy peasy. If you want to learn more about the act, make sure you click through to their social media links to get in the know. You won’t be disappointed!
Why I Wanted To See Joey Dosik: Joey Dosik is another L.A. based artist that I’ve been meaning to catch live for a few years now. Back in 2016, he was one of the artist that was selected to perform as part of Red Bull Sound Select’s 30 Days In LA concert series, and I still regret missing that gig at the Ace Theatre.
It just so happened that he was performing right before a New York based band that shares his sonically retro sensibilities that I wanted to catch, so I rather than wait until he scheduled another L.A. gig, I got to the showcase at Bangers presented by Culture Collide and Stubhub early to catch him do his thing.
What I Thought Of Joey Dosik’s Performance: The old colleague of mine who attended that 30 Days In L.A. gig profusely romanticized that performance, describing to me the richness of the soulful sound that Joey created with his (if I recall correctly) nine-piece band. Although I was hoping for a similar grand presentation, I tempered my expectations because I know how expensive it would have been for Joey to travel to Texas with that kind of band.
Rather, Joey took the stage as trio, accompanied only by a drummer and a bassist … but his sound was still as rich and soulful as could be.
Joey appears to be a reserved, soft-spoken young man. Almost coy and bashful. His wearing glasses for most of the set seemed to add to this reserved notion of mine. But as soon as his fingers were tickling the ivory, and he was singing into the microphone grasping it tightly with both hands when he wasn’t playing, you could hear and feel the soul just explode from him.
Joey is performing in support of his latest album, a deluxe version of his 2016 “Game Winner” EP, but he played a few songs that I hadn’t heard before. His songs “Game Winner” and “Running Away” were clear audience favorites, but there was this one funky jam that really had nodding my head (see the first video below). If anybody knows where I can find that track, please send me a link.
Joey is an extraordinarily talented musician (his association with Vulfpeck is instant validation), and I just can’t wait for him to lay down some more original tracks to wax for a legit full length debut.
