AUSTIN, TX- For most of our SXSW artist coverage, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. Why I Wanted To See Jerry Williams: I had received a couple emails from Jerry’s publicist inquiring whether I’d be interested in checking out one of her performance at SXSW, so I loaded up Spotify decided to check her out. I immediately noticed her most popular song “Mother” (over 5,000,000 streams) which is a fun and perky indie pop gem, but as I kept listening to her playlist, I coy yet seductive “Velcro” whose lyrics were youthfully clever and whose melody was soothing. I was hooked.
What I Thought Of Jerry Williams’ Performance: There’s a good reason why Jerry is incredibly popular in her hometown of Portsmouth and throughout the U.K.: she’s a consummate performer whose bubbly and engaging persona is truly a joy to watch on stage.
Her music, like her personality, is equally engaging. She is a singer-songwriter who really pulls from her life experiences and incorporates little pieces of her with every note she sings. Whether upbeat or slightly more introspective, it was the way she sang her narrative that really captured the audience’s attention.
A particular highlight of the performance for me was when she introduced and performed a song she hadn’t yet recorded: “David At The Bar”. That song, and her explanation as to how she came up with it, really highlighted for me the creative juices that flows in her veins. The way she was able write a wonderful composition from a simple moment in her life speaks volumes on her potential as an artist; and that potential, at such a young age, seems limitless.
