LOS ANGELES, CA- I was able to catch a band named Goldensuns at The Moroccan Lounge earlier this month. After digging their set, I spent some time on the Interwebs to try to learn more about the band. I couldn’t find much, but I did learn that band is a trio of brothers: Wes, Jantzen and Chase Meier. They formed in Salt Lake City in 2013, and self-produced their self-titled EP.
It’s a solid effort that’s predominantly alt, but also has some shoegaze as well as some funk elements shaded in various tracks. Per the band, “Most of the songs paint a very nighttime/dark reddish romantic feel. Sort of a nighttime drive in a city or maybe a sensual candle lit club”.
Listening to them live left a favorable impression on me. The musical interplay amongst the brothers was tight. Clearly, their bloodline carries with it familiar and familial musical instincts. As a trio, they were able to create sonics on a grand scale with their steady bass lines and subtle lead guitar work exchanging grooves seamlessly. First impressions are important, and even with a short set these brothers certainly left a good one on me.
