BadBadNotGood Expand Minds At Air + Style With Their Nu Jazz Jams THOUGHTS+PHOTOS: BADBADNOTGOOD @ AIR + STYLE 3/4/18
LOS ANGELES, CA- If you’ve been to a BadBadNotGood show before, depending on the city you’re in, you never know what expect. This jazz/funk/hip hop instrumental group has worked and collaborated with a who’s is who in the music industry, and if you’re lucky someone may just drop in to join them.
That’s what I was kinda hoping for at Air + Style. BadBadNotGood has been known to cover Gucci Mane songs, and I held a shred of hope that perhaps “LaFlame” would drop in for a quick session … but that didn’t happen. C’est la vie.
A guest appearance by someone like Gucci Mane would have given the set a little buzz, especially with the younger crowd, but it took absolutely nothing away from their stellar interpretation of jazz motifs. Fusing hip-hop and electronic elements, their sonics are proof that traditional training can revolutionize the “classic” and turn it modern. On this afternoon, they relaxed the crowd with a sophisticated performance of nu-jaz jams that felt like an exploration into sound akin to the freestyle sessions that the Skateboarders and Snowboarders were enjoying across the park.
