LOS ANGELES, CA- Russo is a 4 piece band consisting of Cailin Russo (lead-vocals), Hayley Brownell (drums, backing vocals), Tyler McCarthy (guitar) and Sean Ritchie (bass). They are a new band having formed this year, but they’ve had a busy 2018, releasing their debut EP, House with a Pool, in June and gigging steadily in the U.S. and the U.K.
House with a Pool is a solid effort of an album. What the EP does is showcase how musically diverse Russo are, dipping their toes into various genres like punk (“Lonely”), alt rock (“Ghost”) and synth-pop (“Loudmouth”). While the EP feels like it leans pop, with Cailin’s sultry yet affirmative vocals and smart instrumental production, it feels more mature than Cailin’s 24 years.
We were able to catch Russo back in October when they opened up for Dream Wife on their last U.S. tour date at The Echo. Their live performance was a lot of fun. Each member of the band seemed to be having a ball on stage (as you can see from the photo below), especially their lead guitarist, Tyler McCarthy, who showed more exuberance wielding an axe than I had seen in a good while. His playing could easily distract you from Cailin’s performance (and beauty).
Russo recently released a video for the dreamy downtempo cut off House with a Pool, “Joyride”. With hints of the Beatles and George Michael, it’s easy to fall the soothing melodies of this song. Like the videos for they’ve made for the other tracks for House with a Pool, this video is visual representation of another artist facet of Russo. We’re digging all the different sides of Russo.
