As I was waiting in line with the rest of the media/photographers to get into The Belasco for Red Bull Sound Select’s 22nd day of “30 Days In LA”, a mature woman approached me about where guest passes could be procured. I invited her to join us in the media line, and thereafter we chit chatted about the evening’s musical offerings. As it would turn out, the woman standing with me and the other media folk was the mother of the first act of the evening, Villette.
I admitted to “mother” that I was not too familiar with her daughter’s music. She smiled and also admitted that it was sometimes difficult to keep up with her daughter’s musical career. I pulled out my phone and looked her daughter up on Instagram and I don’t blame her being a little out of the loop. Villette has been a busy girl, performing and recording in her home town of Aukland and in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Toronto, this past year.
When I looked at Villette’s Instagram profile, I asked mother about her daughter’s social media handle (@VilletteDasha). She smiled with pride as she explained that that was the name she gave Villette and that each part “Villette” and “Dasha” had it’s own meaning. She explained that “Villette” was of French origin that meant “small town”, and that “Dasha” was of Russian origin that meant “God’s gift”. We both smiled as I put the the two together and said, “God’s gift to a small town.”
When I heard Villette sing that evening, I could only imagine her mother beaming with pride. Performing as the opening act of a headliner such as AlunaGeorge can be a daunting task, but Villette took the stage by herself with a coy confidence and lulled the anxious audience to attention with her smoky vocals and soothing musicality.
After my time in the photo pit was over, I scanned the side stage to see if I could find mother in the wings. There she was, like the rest of us, eyes transfixed on her daughter, who’s talent is surely a “Villette Dasha”, that may eventually become a “Grande Ville Dasha”, though I would recommend keeping the name Villette.
