Dana Point, CA- The first night of Ohana Fest was the hardest rocking of the weekend, with sets by The Orwells, TV on the Radio, Social Distortion and The Pixies. The darker, moody Pixies set seemed contrary to the sunny beach vibes, but still managed to elicit feelings of nostalgia from the older fans and reverence from the newer ones.
Since their return in 2004 The Pixies have consistently delivered strong shows that prove, at least to this alt-rock fan, that the reunion, after an 11-year breakup, was worth it. The psychedelic surf rockers comprised of Black Francis, Joey Santiago, David Lovering and Paz Lenchantin are still the iconic act that helped establish alternative rock in the ‘80s and ‘90s. They peppered their set with old favorites, “Monkey Gone To Heaven,” “Debaser,” “Wave of Mutilation,” “Bone machine,” and “Where Is My Mind.” Though it wasn’t all classics as they dropped new material from their 2016 album, “Head Carrier,” including “Um Chagga Lagga,” “Bel Esprit,” “Classic Masher,” and “Gouge Away.”
Each song flowed into the next with the proficiency of time-tested rockers. They ended the night with big raunchy guitar chords blaring as they left the crowd entranced. The only negative critique I heard in the crowd was one disheartened fan saying she was still, “outside by the box car waiting,” sad that they didn’t play “Here Comes Your Man.” But if they played everyone’s favorite song we would have been there all night.
