LONG BEACH, CA- Another Hawaii based reggae band that graced the One Love main stage was The Green. They found some success in late 2017 when their album, “Marching Orders” was released and reached #1 on the Billboard Reggae Album chart. They have been touring since in support of it.
It’s funny … my first impressions of this band based on their stalky and grizzled appearance was their reggae would hit a little harder in the ska vein. I was totally wrong. Their music is straight up lovers’ rock; a sensual blending of pop and rock elements with the underlying reggae themes supporting it. There’s also a distinct flavor of Hawaiian influence in their music with simple and soothing melodies backed by catchy rhythms and lyrics that go out of their way to tell a story.
Caleb Keolanui’s vocals were mellifluous. It’s a voice that I can hear easily crossing over into the pop and R&B genres. And when those vocals are backed by the pitch perfect harmonies of his fellow bandmates? It’s the kind of green you’d want to puff on all day.
