LOS ANGELES, CA- There is a special relationship between cult films and music. Sometimes a song helps define a movie. Other times, a movie introduces audiences to a band they might never have discovered otherwise. Over time, the two become inseparable. Think of the Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?” and Fight Club, Gary Jules’ haunting rendition of “Mad World” in Donnie Darko, or The Dickies’ theme song for Killer Klowns from Outer Space. In each case, the music became part of the mythology surrounding the film itself.

That thought crossed my mind while attending a private screening of Geisha War at The Garland in North Hollywood. The latest film from legendary Japanese filmmaker Yoshihiro Nishimura is exactly the kind of movie that feels destined to develop a passionate cult following. It also happens to feature four songs from Long Beach’s own The Anti Groupies, who performed immediately following the screening.

For those unfamiliar with Nishimura’s work, subtlety has never been part of the appeal. The filmmaker built his reputation through films such as Tokyo Gore Police, Helldriver, and The Ninja War of Torakage, becoming one of the most recognizable figures in Japanese splatter cinema. “Splatter cinema” is a subgenre of horror films that places a heavy emphasis on graphic depictions of blood, gore, bodily mutilation, and over-the-top violence. The goal is often not simply to scare audiences, but to shock, amuse, disgust, or astonish them through extreme visual effects.

Geisha War proudly follows in that tradition.

On the American side of the production, Geisha War was produced by Robert Rhine, founder and publisher of Girls and Corpses magazine and the driving force behind Girls and Corpses Films. A longtime fixture in the horror and genre-film community, Rhine has spent years championing independent horror through publishing, filmmaking, and producing projects that embrace the same offbeat, boundary-pushing spirit that helped define Yoshihiro Nishimura’s work. Together, Rhine and Nishimura brought Geisha War to life as a rare American-Japanese co-production that blends Eastern and Western genre influences into one unapologetically wild cinematic experience.

Within the first fifteen minutes, I could tell the film had the potential to become a cult classic. The movie is gloriously messy in all the right ways. Traditional geisha aesthetics collide with samurai lore, futuristic technology, steampunk influences, zombie carnage, and enough outrageous gore to satisfy even the most dedicated genre fans. Pistols seem to fire an endless supply of bullets. A ramen shop employee wields a noodle strainer as a weapon against zombies. At one point, I found myself wondering if I was watching a movie or experiencing a fever dream brought to life from the pages of a manga.

Not every creative choice lands. The pacing occasionally drifts, and some of the more surreal moments left me scratching my head. A sequence involving planetary hair buns and another featuring a geisha’s scissor-fueled rampage felt especially bizarre. Then again, “especially bizarre” is often part of the charm when it comes to Nishimura’s work.

Despite its rough edges, Geisha War embraces its campy identity with such confidence that resistance becomes futile. Rather than trying to explain its absurdity, the film invites audiences to surrender to it. By the time the credits rolled, I found myself imagining the movie eventually finding new life through midnight screenings, convention circuits, and streaming platforms where cult favorites often thrive.

What makes Geisha War particularly notable is that it stands among Nishimura’s final works. The acclaimed filmmaker passed away in Tokyo earlier this year following a battle with liver disease. At the time of his death, Geisha War was in post-production, giving the film added significance as one of the final chapters in a career that helped shape modern Japanese genre cinema.

The emotional weight of that reality was not lost on The Anti Groupies.

The all-female hard rock and punk outfit has built a growing reputation throughout Southern California with a sound that channels the rebellious spirit of 1990s alternative rock while maintaining a distinctly modern edge. Their music appears prominently throughout Geisha War, with four songs featured in the film: “Ghost Of You,” “Envy,” “Cigarette Slut,” and “Not My Problem.” According to the production team, the band’s high-energy American rock sound was intentionally utilized to bring an American flavor to the Japanese-American co-production.

Following the screening, The Anti Groupies took the stage and demonstrated exactly why their music fit so naturally within Nishimura’s cinematic universe. The band’s unapologetic attitude and aggressive energy mirrored the film’s own refusal to conform to expectations. Just as Geisha War rejects traditional storytelling boundaries, The Anti Groupies reject any notion that female-fronted rock bands should play it safe.

The connection between filmmaker and band feels almost poetic. Nishimura spent decades creating films that celebrated outsiders, weirdos, and rebels. The Anti Groupies carry a similar spirit into their music.

The band’s connection to the project has also taken on a more bittersweet dimension following Nishimura’s passing

“We were very shocked when we were told about the passing of Mr. Nishimura. We were really looking forward to meeting him in person at our upcoming Geisha War screening performance in Japan. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.” – The Anti Groupies lead vocalist Cassidy Fleeman.

Whether Geisha War ultimately achieves cult-classic status remains to be seen. Cult followings cannot be manufactured. They emerge organically through passionate fans who discover something unique and decide to champion it for years to come.

Still, after experiencing Nishimura’s latest fever dream firsthand, I would not be surprised if Geisha War eventually develops that kind of devoted audience. And if it does, The Anti Groupies may find themselves enjoying one of the most rewarding outcomes a synchronization placement can offer: becoming part of a film’s legacy.

Long after the blood stops spraying and the zombies stop falling, audiences may very well leave Geisha War asking the same question many cult-film fans have asked before:

“Who was that band?”
