Tamzene’s SXSW Performance: A Timeless Blend of Contemporary Pop and Classic Edge Thoughts+Photos: Tamzene at The North Door during SXSW 3/16/23
AUSTIN, TX- Scottish singer-songwriter Tamzene Allison-Power, known simply as Tamzene, was on my “must-see” list for SXSW. As I was preparing for my travels to Austin, going through various playlists, one of her songs instantly struck a chord with me. I’ll talk about that song in a later post… but just know that it’s not often a song or an artist makes me hold my breath on the first listen. Tamzene did. At just 24 years old, this singer-songwriter sings with a mature soul, beautifully exploring themes of personal growth, heartbreak, and acceptance of leaving relationships behind.
I hadn’t planned to see Tamzene perform at The North Door. In fact, I didn’t even know she was slated to be there. I was planning to catch another act, one that a publicist had brought to my attention. I couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised.
With only Tamzene seated at a piano, the room fell into hushed silence, captivated by her dulcet tones. There’s a timelessness to her approach to songwriting and performing. She creates a space for the audience to connect with her on an emotional level, expressing her love for sharing her words and melodies without restraint. Her blend of contemporary pop with a classic edge is undeniable, and you can’t help but feel transported to a time when words and melodies truly mattered.
She didn’t perform the song that first hooked me into her catalog, but my longing would later be satisfied. I’ll be sharing more about that in a future post.”
