LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, CA- Summer sounds awaken the tranquil Descanso Gardens with their weekly events. Descanso Gardens is one of the most beautiful, yet underrated places to visit. Situated in La Canada Flintridge, CA about 20 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, this peaceful 150 acre botanical garden is home to several varieties of plants, flowers, trees, and wildlife. It almost feels like in every section of the garden you are transported to a different parts of the world. Whether exploring the rose garden, gazing at the Koi pond in the Japanese garden or hiking up where the mighty oaks forest grow tall, you will feel all the stress of city life evaporate in this place of beauty.
On select days during the summer, Descanso stays open until the evening, allowing visitors the chance to explore the gardens and dance to sounds of the beat. On Wednesday night Descanso holds a special event from 5:30 pm – 8 pm. Flashdance DJ spins groovy old school sounds of the 70s, 80s, and 90s from the glam rock of David Bowie to the funk of Parliament. As the DJ spins vinyl spectators set up their lawn chair or spread out their blankets on the lawn. Some munch on food they brought, others grab meals from Panni, while a few just come to grab a beer or glass of wine sold at the event. Families, friends, and couples all enjoying twilight hour with good food and great music. Kids run and hop to the music. A couple sips on wine. It’s a great mini break from the hustle and bustle of the work week.
While some may spend the evening listening to music, other spectators take time to explore the rest of the gardens. “I find this place so tranquil,” stated Monica who was admiring some ducks and turtles in the Lilly pond, “The place is very zen”. Others pointed to the flora and fauna in amazement during their stroll. There is so much to see and every visit is different, from the blooming plants you spot to the wildlife frolicking.
Descanso Gardens is truly a must see place, whether going for the gardens or for an evening filled with music. Take some time to smell the roses.
