AUSTIN, TX- The British Music Embassy is an initiative created by the UK’s Department for International Trade and the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) to promote British music at major international festivals and events. It provides a platform for UK artists to showcase their talent and network with industry professionals from around the world. The embassy’s main base is at the annual SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, but it also operates at other events such as The Great Escape in Brighton and Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg. The British Music Embassy offers support to artists in areas such as visa applications, marketing, and logistics, with the aim of helping them to expand their global reach and export their music.
Liverpool-based singer-songwriter Alex Stephens, better known as Strawberry Guy, has quickly gained a following for his dreamy, psychedelic pop sound and introspective lyrics. Since debuting his lo-fi, DIY approach to recording in 2017, Stephens has been charming audiences with his catchy, upbeat melodies. He dropped his first single, “Without You,” in 2018, and followed it up with a self-titled EP the following year.
Steeped in the psychedelic pop of the 1960s, Strawberry Guy’s sound is also influenced by modern-day luminaries such as Mac DeMarco and Tame Impala. Through his music, Stephens explores themes of love, loss, and self-discovery, all infused with his distinctive, soulful vocals. His performance for the The British Music Embassy was a romantically subdued affair. With him sitting at they keyboard, only occasionally accompanied by tracks of whimsical strings programmed into his synth, he explored those themes with dreamy, downtempo numbers.
