LONG BEACH, CA- As soon as I saw Scott Woodruff’s dog Cocoa casually meander across the stage prior to the band’s performance, I had a feeling that I would be fully digging the dub stylings of this Nor-Cal based band.
This was the first time I listened to Scott Woodruff’s band’s music, and their stop at One Love is one of many gigs the band will play throughout the year. They wound down their “Above The Storm Tour” and will embark on Slightly Stoopid’s “Schools Out For Summer” tour starting in June with appearances at SweetWater 420 Fest and Red Rocks prior to that tour’s start.
My first impression of Stick Figure was a positive one. The band played the music flawlessly, which gave the performance a gliding feeling. The rhythms were hypnotic to me and Scott’s tender vocals were equally so. Their upbeat vibe only added to the mellowed positivity of the performance. It was one of those performance where I wished I wasn’t working, otherwise I would have lit one up, laid out on the lawn and lounged around like Cocoa did on stage.
Towards the end of their set, they invited a rapper rocking a Hieroglyphics sweater.I would find out later that that guest’s name was TJ O’Neil.
