LOS ANGELES, CA- Opening for Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors at the El Rey 4/27/17 was Americana singer-songwriter Stephen Kellogg. Taking the stage all by his lonesome with just his acoustic guitar and affable personality, he entertained the crowd with his masterful storytelling through song.
Even if you didn’t know who Stephen Kellogg was, after his set you would have been hard-pressed not to recognize him as anything but a seasoned performer. In between songs, he would humor us with recent anecdotes from the day before, or talk lovingly about his family. His stories were truly of and for the everyman, and gave us a glimpse into the kind heart that he possessed. He only performed a handful of songs (which included “4th of July” and “Thanksgiving” among other) but the lyrics and sentiment of each were so pure and so plainspoken, you couldn’t help but hang on every word to allow his tender voice to imbue those feeling of which he was singing about.
As an special treat, at the conclusion of his set, he asked Drew to join him on stage for “* Good Light”.
I don’t know him too well, but I know that I could have listened to him sing for as long as he wanted too, because there’s nothing more enjoyable than having a master storyteller cast a spell using just his voice and an acoustic guitar.
