Long Beach, CA- The first band we were able to catch at Music Tastes Good was the Long Beach based group named Spirit Mother. This quartet led by Armand Lance immediately caught my attention. There was something familiar to me in their music that had me metaphorically scratching my head while I was taking photos during their 30 minute set. There was something about the heavy mood that they created with their thumping bass lines, Armand’s yearning vocals and the steady violin arrangements that really had me excited about following how they develop as a band.
The define their music as “psych power pop”, but my little exposure to them during their performance had me feeling some of the edgy Jeff Buckley alternative rock feels a la “Sketches for My Sweetheart The Drunk”. However they evolve, I’ll be keeping an eye out on them.
