AUSTIN, TX- Skinny Lister electrified the Marshall Funhouse at Parish crowd during SXSW 2024 with a raucous performance that blended folk charm with punk tones. Taking the stage with infectious enthusiasm, the British band surprised me with their unique musical mix and incredible energy. From the first stomp to begin the set through the chants and sing-alongs, Skinny Lister was the most fun set I saw at the festival this year.
Skinny Lister, formed in 2009, has made a name for themselves with their high-energy performances and unique sound that combines traditional British folk music with the raw intensity of punk rock. Their discography includes several albums, such as “Forge & Flagon” (2012), “Down on Deptford Broadway” (2015), and “The Story Is…” (2019). Each album showcases their ability to mix rollicking sea shanties, foot-stomping anthems, and heartfelt ballads, creating a nostalgic and refreshingly modern sound.
I’m guessing that Skinny Lister is working on new material for their upcoming album. This new project promises to build on their established sound while exploring new musical territories. Fans can anticipate more of the band’s signature high-energy performances and catchy, sing-along choruses that have made them a favorite in the folk-punk scene. In the meantime, you can enjoy their latest release, “Pus Shed Bootleg EP” and enjoy the live raucousness that I experienced in the comfort of your own room.
The band’s chemistry and enjoyment radiated on stage as lead singer Lorna Thomas and Max Thomas on accordion led the crowd in several chants, claps, and stomps throughout the set. Crowd participation turned up to 100 midway through the show when Thomas jumped into the audience and challenged them to multiple arm wrestling matches on the backs of delighted volunteers. All the while, the band played on with encouragement.
At times throughout the set, I felt like I was singing old folk tunes with my neighbors over a pint in a British pub. The tightly packed setting of the Funhouse exacerbated those feelings as if a scene from a feel-good British movie. That’s how I felt watching and listening to Skinny Lister perform.
Their SXSW performance was a testament to their ability to blend traditional folk instrumentation with a punk-rock spirit, delivering an exhilarating and heartfelt show. They’re a grand ole’ time and a must-see at festivals and any tour stops along the way. Overall, Skinny Lister’s performance at SXSW 2024 was a perfect example of what makes them such a beloved band. Their ability to blend folk and punk elements into a cohesive and thrilling live show is unmatched, and their genuine connection with their fans ensures that every concert is a communal celebration of music and camaraderie.
