LOS ANGELES, CA- I’ve seen a handful of my music peers post about Sir Sly on social media over the years, but for some reason I never took the time to check out their music. That all changed when I was able to catch them opening for K.Flay at the Fonda last month.
With a huge illuminated brain glowing behind them, Landon Jacobs (vocals and guitar), Hayden Coplen (drums) and Jason Suwito (synths and bass) played a set that was energized and entertaining, and made me regret the years I spent nonchalantly passing them by.
Their music matches the same kind of tone and spirit that K.Flay’s music embodies, so having them as her opener for tour seemed like good fit. Like K.Flay, their music melds various genres of music to create a sound that is wholly their own. Electronica, alternative rock and hip-hop elements that had audience members dancing to their rhythms, and with lyrics that seemed to touch on serious social and emotional topics, Sir Sly’s performance also embodied a virtuous and human air.
What I found most engaging about their performance was the spirit and tenacity of their frontman, Landon Jacobs. His passion was palpable. Notwithstanding his highflying antics jumping off Hayden’s drum kit, his friendly interactions with Jason, or his on-point vocals, it was the time he spent addressing the crowd with his concerns about our country and its leadership that really caught my attention.
Now, I don’t necessarily think that raising political perspectives to an audience who are there to simply enjoy a concert is necessarily a wise move … but when it is cloaked in music (in this instance, in the form of a freestyle rap- see the second video below) it’s much easier to accept as pure entertainment. The way he spit those free flowing rhymes was so intense and visceral, it got the adrenaline in my veins pumping, and got me primed to enjoy the music that would come from K.Flay later in the evening.
