AUSTIN, TX- I grew up playing classical piano. Through years and years of practice, I learned how to play hundreds of songs. I was drawn to some music. I detested some music. But whenever I found a piece that I enjoyed playing and listening to, I pretty much knew it instantly. I could just feel it in my gut. The way that the flow and tones were in perfect accord … I knew it when I heard it. When I heard Silvina Moreno’s music, I got that same feeling.
Silvina was born and raised in Buenos Aires, but enrolled at the Berklee College of Music for her graduate degree. She has released three albums, Mañana (2011) Real (2015) and Sofá (2017) which are predominantly sung in Spanish, and each album highlights her knack of melding the musical heritage of her Argentine roots while sprinkling each song splashes of American rock and pop sensibilities.
Now, I don’t speak Spanish (silly me for studying French in high school and college), but there was something earnest and pristine in her songwriting that had me listening to her Spotify repertoire list for close to two hours without skipping any tracks. From her fun upbeat tracks to her romantic melodies, I just enjoyed listening to her music … Even when I didn’t understand a word of it.
When I arrived at her official SXSW showcase, I noticed that on the stage was just a chair. This would performance would obviously be a stripped down performance of her music, lacking the lush and wonderful string arrangements, punchy horn sections or pulsing percussion that I enjoyed listening to. It wouldn’t matter though. Silvina’s stripped down performance was just as enchanting and enjoyable as her studio recordings.
Armed with just her acoustic guitar or a tricked out washboard and a kazoo, Silvina’s performance was a joy to watch and listen to. Her set consisted of Spanish language songs, but she would take the time to explain to the audience (in English) the context of each song, which gave us non-speaking listeners the opportunity to use our imagination to dream up our own story as she passionately sang her own.
Charming. Humorous. Entertaining. I’m a fan of Silvina. If you are looking for easy-going music to get lost in, whether or not you understand what’s being sung, I’d give her a listen. De nada.
