Los Angeles, CA- Sampha Sisay is “Sampha”, a British electronic music singer-songwriter and producer who is best known for his collaborations with artist’s like SBTRKT, Drake, Kanye West and, most recently, Solange Knowles.
I’ll be frank you with, I’ve known OF Sampha (his voice is basically on every track of SBTRKT’s 2001, hit debut album), but truthfully speaking, I don’t know much of anything about his own personal discography. He released an EP (“Dual”) a couple years ago, but if he’s followed that up with anything, I hadn’t heard of it. So when I took my seat at the Palace Theatre, I expected him to perform those songs, or at least incorporate those songs, that I was already keenly familiar with.
To my surprise (and delight), Sampha didn’t play a single song that I could recall. For me, it was an evening of “brand new” music that truly showcased the emotive soul of his voice and highlighted his penchant for crafting subtle R&B compositions that serve as a conduit to that soul.
His compositions leaned a little darker than I would have expected, but that only added to the weight of emotion that he performed with. He spent his time on stage behind his keyboard setup, and hardly moved from that position, but his music and his voice and his instrumentations did not need any more choreography than that. Add the sparse house lighting that for the most part spotlit the top of his, which would only reveal his face when he looked up to the sky to pull notes from his upper register, and you had a performance that was a beyond soulfully passionate, it was cathartic.
