LONG BEACH, CA- When I told some of my friends that I was going to attend One Love Cali Reggae Fest, one of my female friend insisted that I see Sammy Johnson perform. When I saw the New Zealand born, Los Angeles based artist take the stage and heard him sing, I saw/heard the draw instantly.
His music is equal parts reggae and soul. His rhythm and blues sensibilities give his songs a real pop sensibility. His yoked frame and chiseled looks notwithstanding, when his mellifluous voice effortlessly performed runs throughout his songs, it was clear to me that women would be staring longingly at the stage throughout the performance if they weren’t singing along to his sensuous melodies.
Most of his music was thematically based on topics of love, but I was particularly interested in his song “Sleepwalker” which was a heartfelt ode to his life as solitary artist.
There’s a lot of potential in Sammy Johnson. His voice is strong enough to venture into other less restrictive genres, and I’d be interested to hear how his art evolves.
