LOS ANGELES, CA- One of the first showcases I hit up at SXSW was the Music Tech Mashup! “powered by Dentity” and the Empire Garage. This lineup seemed to consist of local favorites;; some of whom I was familiar with, others I was a not.
One act that I would be introduced to was Pearl Z. Loved the hard rock energy that this band gave me. Their front woman (who I think is named Pearl), is a pint-sized powerhouse, who can dole out some serious, sneered lip rocker attitude with the best of them. I absolutely loved it when songs took Pearl up into the higher, raspy register of her voice.
The crowd, which seemed evenly split between locals and out-of-towners, was clearly loving the hard hitting energy coming from the stage. When heads are banging and unprompted horned/clapping hands get thrown up into the air, you know you’re hitting all of the right notes. Pearl Z certainly did that and gave me a lot of optimism that my first trip back to Austin SXSW in 4 four years would be a good one.
