LOS ANGELES, CA-  There’s something comforting about a song that doesn’t try too hard to overwhelm you. No giant emotional breakdowns. No overproduced chaos fighting for your attention every few seconds. Sometimes you just want a warm melody, a steady rhythm, and a hook that makes life feel a little lighter. That’s exactly what Patrick Droney delivers with his new single “Back In My Body.”

Released alongside the announcement of his upcoming Warner Records album Made You Look, due out July 24, the track feels easygoing in the best way possible. It’s reflective without getting too heavy, catchy without sounding forced, and full of the kind of warmth that feels perfect for late spring heading into summer.

Lately, I’ve been revisiting a lot of older, happier music, and this song immediately hit that same spot for me. There’s a folksy looseness to it that reminded me a little of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, especially in the rhythm and the whistles woven throughout the song. It has that same free-flowing energy that makes you want to roll the windows down and just vibe with it for a while.

But underneath that lighthearted sound, the song is really about reconnecting with yourself after feeling emotionally lost. Early lines like “How to shake the sour taste of bitterness I felt” introduce somebody struggling to find their footing again, while the repeated phrase “I’m back in my body” becomes less of a catchy lyric and more of a genuine realization.

That theme lines up closely with what Droney says inspired Made You Look. According to the press release, the album focuses on the small moments people often overlook in everyday life, with Droney aiming for a more intimate and vulnerable style of songwriting. You can hear that throughout this track. Nothing about it feels overly polished or calculated. It just feels honest.

The song was reportedly written while Droney isolated himself in an attic with only his guitar and his thoughts, and that stripped-down emotional core comes through clearly. Even when the lyrics lean poetic, like “I swam the river in the hard rain,” the song never loses its grounded feeling. It’s ultimately about getting back to yourself after a difficult stretch and realizing things might actually be okay again.

Made You Look will also feature collaborations with Kelsea Ballerini and contributions from collaborators associated with artists like Kacey Musgraves and Lucy Dacus. If “Back In My Body” is any indication, Droney’s next album could end up being one of those records that quietly sneaks into people’s regular rotation without demanding attention. Sometimes those are the albums that stay with you the longest.
