Santa Barbara- If there’s a musical genre that pairs nicely with wine- other than jazz or classical- it’s 1950s inspired blues and R&B. Nick Waterhouse’s modern take on the classic R&B sounds of Booker T-Washington and the like is more of a reinvention of the genre rather than a throwback and it set a perfectly light-hearted mood at the polo grounds.
I’ve seen Nick Waterhouse perform live several times over the past five years, and all I can say is his sound- at least to my novices ears- keeps getting better and better. A lot of that is surely Nick’s dedication to the faithful technique of the genre, but it’s also due to the superb ability of his band. The punch of the horns on the down-beat and the powerful female vocals of Nick’s background singer were particularly sweet ear-candy for me. Their synchronicity and shared enthusiasm for the music was not lost on me, and every time they shared smiles across the stage during the performance, I found myself smiling along with them.
Fine classy tunes with some fine classy wine. A pairing that couldn’t have been any nicer.
