Opening acts don’t always get the attention they deserve. It’s early in the night and people are still arriving, outside meeting up with friends, standing in line to grab drinks. But for people like me, who live to discover the up and coming, Nick León’s set was a perfect way to start the night.
He’s a DJ whose melodies are so seamlessly blended that it’s hard not to focus, vibe out, and think deep thoughts. He’s able to speed up the tempo, then slow it down, then turn up the bass. His mix almost gives me Houston, TX chopped and screwed vibes, but with way more rhythm.
I admire the way he’s able to play on our emotions in his music, and I noticed how his stage lighting played a part too. Deep purples, royal blues, it all created a very eerie but chill environment. You can hear bells, tambourines, bass drums, almost every range of percussion in his tracks.
Nick Leon is exactly what you want to listen to when you want to turn up slightly but vibe out at the same time. He can really take a beat…give it this majestic house feel and then all of a sudden trap it out. His music was perfect at this point of the night because you could still dance, have a conversation, and do everything you needed to before you got to your seat.
If you’re looking to discover some new melodies, take a listen to Nick Leon’s debut album Profecía.
