AUSTIN, TX- Hard work and hustle toward a life of “shows, service and self-development”. Adrienne Mack-Davis and feleciacruz [stet] are the living embodiment of that ethos. The hip-hop/soul duo, professionally known as “New Fame”, has a genre-melding style that combines elements of hip-hop, dance, trap, reggae and dancehall. They were borne out of NYC, but have travelled the world performing over 1000 gigs and leading 50 workshops in 8 countries before setting up shop in Saigon, Vietnam. Honing their sound with Vietnam’s DJ Skulz, they came to Austin to drop some of their vision onto the SXSW masses.
I was able to catch them at the Empire Garage and it was a super hyped set. Despite it being an early evening time-slot, Adrienne and felecia tore through their set with an energy befitting a headliner. Adrienne’s ability to switch it up from smooth raps to soulful singing was particularly enjoyable to see/hear, and watching the two’s musical energy come to life on stage really gave the venue a nice jolt of life as well.
They were one of the first musical acts that I was able to catch SXSW, and ironically enough, they were literally the last band I saw in Austin. I didn’t see them at a performance, but rather walking the streets of Austin after finishing a gig earlier in the evening. It seemed like bumping into them on the last night of SXSW’s musical festival was kind of destined to happen.
They were really satisfied with their SXSW experience and told me that their goals for SXSW was to pack out their “official” showcase and work towards developing further relationships toward becoming part of semi or semi-major tour; both of which they accomplished. Not only were they proud of packing out their own showcase, but they reveled in getting the chance at opening for underground hip-hop legends Aceyalone, Fatlip, Maseo and Kool Keith. [As an aside, Innercity Griots by Freestyle Fellowship- a group that Aceylone was a founding member of- is one of my favorite hip-hop albums of all time]. That’s darn good company.
New Fame will be touring the United States all summer then back to Vietnam in September to record and release more music including their newest single by Russian producer Yujin “Riiiiight”. If you wanna check out some of their visual, peep their Youtube page.
