Mrkloveyous Powered Through Sound Issues For A Powerful Set Thoughts+Photos: Mrklovesyou at The Echo 2/13/23
LOS ANGELES, CA- Sometimes performances don’t go as planned. I could get a sense that something was out with the sound on the stage when Mrklovesyou started her performance: her vocals weren’t coming out of the house speakers. Since I was up front, I could hear her vocals coming out of the stage monitors, but I wasn’t getting that 360 aural effect you normally get when the music fill the room. A couple of songs in, Crook stepped onto the stage and asked to pause the performance in order to get the problem resolved.
With the room in silent darkness as the house tech looked to get figure our what the issue was, Madison Rene Knapp p/k/a “Mrklovesyou” decided the break the tension and sing a song a cappella into the darkness. As she sang the lyrics, “Until the day the sun doesn’t shine”, I got some tingles in spine. That was a moment.
I loved that fearlessness in Madison in that moment. To turn lemons into lemonade showed a kind of courage and confidence that speaks volumes of her. It also reflected quite nicely the kind of music that Mrkloveyou creates. Complex art rock that harkens Annie Clark and LCD flavors. Maybe a little bit of Bjork was well. Thankfully, the sound issues were resolved and Mrklovesyou and Madison was able to close the with a furious flourish.
