LUCK, TX- For most of our SXSW and Luck Reunion artist coverage, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. We have over 80 artists to cover, so cut us some slack! 😉 We’ll basically be formatting each post into two parts: (1) Why our contributor wanted to see this act and (2) what our contributor thought of the performance”. Easy peasy. If you want to learn more about the act, make sure you click through to their social media links to get in the know. You won’t be disappointed!

Why I Wanted To See Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real: Luck Reunion is a family oriented festival, and on scheduled to perform throughout the day on the main stage were two of Willie Nelson’s sons: Particle Kid fronted by Willie’s son Micah at 6:00pm and Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real at 6:40pm. After Ezra Furman‘s set, I had allocated time for me to eat dinner thereafter, and having to pick between the two brothers, I gave the edge to the senior of the two.
What I Thought Of Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real’s Performance: Of all of the musicians in attendance at Luck Reunion this year, Lukas Nelson appeared to be the busiest. Not only did he perform with his band Promise the Real, he and his band also backed up half of Kurt Vile‘s set and he also played with his father in the evening’s final performance, highlighted by his soulful cover of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Texas Flood”. But Lukas really shined during his own main stage performance of .
By the time Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real took to the stage, main stage set-times had been pushed back a little. In order to catch up with the scheduled times, Lukas Nelson’s set-times was trimmed a few minutes to get everything running back on time. But even with a shortened performance, Lukas gave the audience the Performing songs from their self-titled 2017 album, Lukas imbued the audience with his uniquely diverse roots rock … and more.
Culling some of my favorite tracks from his 2017 self titled album, including “Just Outside of Austin” (see video below), Lukas performed with a flare and cool that personified the diversity of his music. Whether the sonics were ethereal or soulful or straight up rowdy, Lukas sat comfortably in the pocket of each mood.
And as if his own performance wasn’t enough, he called upon the delightful country chanteuse Margo Price (who also pulled double duty performing an intimate set at Luck’s Chapel) to join him on stage to back him up for “Fool Me Once”; a vocal pairing that I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing (and hearing) more of in the future.
