AUSTIN, TX- Being Dead is a psychedelic garage-jazz-rock that I was able to catch by chance at SXSW. While waiting to see another band, this band, founded by Juli Keller and Cody Dosier, had me both laughing out loud and banging my head during their performance.
Their music was an amalgam of surf rock and garage punk, and had a really carefree spirit about it. Their stage manner was as equally carefree as they would casually engage in goofy banter between songs while they switched instruments. That natural freedom really came across in their music, and made it that much more enjoyable to me.
I tried to find out more about this Austin based band, but there wasn’t much in the way of Google, but I did find an article where the band Being Dead compares it to an immersion into a realm of tense circumstances, where survival hinges on the power of teamwork with their sounds evoking the sensations of a vivid dream or a haunting nightmare. Whatever their angel, I think that they defy expectations… they defied mine… and is a promising band to keep an eye on going forward.
Editor’s Note: During their performance, they invited someone onto the stage to help sing a song. Based on my limited knowledge of the band, this may have been a former member (or current member who may have had to work that evening) of the band. Anybody know her name?
