LOS ANGELES, CA- Call it a major coincidence, or whatever you want to call it, but over the past week I have been waging a very literal war against ants at my residence. There’s been a fairly sizable outbreak, which has meant strategically placing ant bait traps throughout the house while occasionally discovering some random ant crawling up my leg or across my arm. So yeah, ants have been on my mind.
Then K.Flay releases a song called “Ants.”
Obviously, I had to check it out.
Thankfully, the coincidence got me through the door, but the song kept me there. “Ants” is a fucking banger. There’s an almost overwhelming energy to the track, and K.Flay attacks it with the kind of wonderfully spastic intensity that immediately reminded me why I became a fan in the first place. Listening to it brought me back to the first time I saw her perform live years ago, when that same restless physicality and barely contained energy seemed to come pouring out of her.
And “Ants” needs that energy because underneath all of that aggression is a song about power, and what happens to the people unfortunate enough to be standing underneath it.

K.Flay describes “Ants” as being about “the destructive nature of power,” but what makes the song considerably more interesting is that she doesn’t simply point upward at corporations, governments and billionaires. She implicates herself in the equation as well. Her explanation is wonderfully simple: she wears boots. She kills ants. The scale of power may change, but somebody is almost always standing above somebody else.
That idea becomes the backbone of the song. From her perch in the hills, K.Flay looks down at a volatile world where people have become tiny figures moving beneath her. The perspective eventually gives way to the song’s central image: if you want to wear the big boots, something underneath those boots is probably going to get crushed.
From there, “Ants” becomes an absolute barrage. Billionaires, tax avoidance, despots, bloodshed, guns, political paralysis, fake news, plastics, brainrot and our seemingly endless appetite for distraction all get thrown into the blender. There’s so much coming at you that the overload almost becomes part of the point. The world is fucked up, everybody knows the world is fucked up, and somehow we keep participating in it anyway.
That last part is what really lands for me.

It would have been easy to make “Ants” a middle-finger protest song aimed exclusively at the people sitting at the top. Instead, K.Flay eventually turns the finger around. Anger feeds anger. Hate breeds hate. And the person wearing the boot today can just as easily be the ant underneath somebody else’s tomorrow.
Maybe that’s why my own ridiculous little battle with the ants crawling around my house made the song hit a little differently. I’ve spent the past week trying to eradicate the little bastards while simultaneously listening to K.Flay use them as a metaphor for what happens when power stops seeing the individuals underneath it.
I’m not putting away the ant bait traps.
But K.Flay certainly gave me something to think about while I’m setting them.
