Long Beach, CA- Juana Molina was one of the artists scheduled to perform at Music Tastes Good that I had to ask google for help learning about. Juana was a popular Argentine comedic actress in the 1990s, before quitting the acting profession to pursue music. By her sophomore album, “Segundo”, she was receiving critical praise for her musical output, with The Guardian even calling her the “one-time Queen of Latin Chill”.
Having just released her 7th studio album “Halo” earlier this year, I figured that I would use that music for my Juana Molina education. Wow. This was something special. It was a kind of electronic folk music that I had never heard before. Listening to her music, despite me not understanding a single word she was singing, I was captivated. It was kind of like the feeling I had the first time I heard Radiohead’s “The Bends”. Wow.
Despite a few technical difficulties that she and her band encountered at the start of the performance, Juana was able to lull me into a mild hypnosis by her spells of sonic wizardry. It really didn’t matter that neither she nor her band were particularly active on stage. After I had finished my time in the pit, I laid myself down on the grassy lawn, closed my eyes and just let her foreign music permeated my mind, and entered into world that was ruled by a Queen of Latin chill.
Thanks, Music Tastes Good.
