AUSTIN, TX- Jad Fair is an American musician and visual artist, best known as the co-founder and frontman of the band Half Japanese. Half Japanese is an experimental rock band that was formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1974, and is known for their unconventional sound and DIY approach to music-making.
Jad Fair’s music often features a mix of lo-fi instrumentation, off-kilter song structures, and abstract lyrics that touch on themes of love, nature, and the human condition. His vocal style is also distinctive, with a childlike, sometimes nasal quality that adds to the quirky charm of his music. Over the course of his career, Fair has released numerous solo albums, as well as collaborated with other musicians.
The room was packed for Jad Fair’s performance at Fire Records showcase at Hotel Vegas and everyone in attendance seemed engaged and well-versed with Jad’s work, which didn’t come as a surprise as some of his collaborators include Austin’s legendary Daniel Johnston, Teenage Fanclub, and Yo La Tengo amongst many others. A few fans were gushing over the musician’s peculiar guitar with a bending neck! Later that evening I took a quick portrait and he gently posed with his instrument in the back alley of the venue. I was sincerely very happy I got to enjoy their energetic, fun and skillful set.
