AUSTIN, TX- When I was going through my list of possible acts to catch at SXSW, queing up and playing thousands of songs on my digital song player to listen to, there were a handful of times when I had to do a double take at my computer screen make sure who it was I was listening to. I did a double take when Jacob Banks’ song “Unknown (To You)” started to play.
Jacob is a Birmingham, England native and he released his debut album, Village, late last year via Interscope, and it’s an effort that shows some serious potential. While the album could have used a bit more focus in terms its musical direction, I’m pretty sure that even an average ear can surmise that with the right producer at the helm, Jacob’s voice alone can serve as the most adequate foundation for something truly amazing.
Jacob’s voice is pure butter. It’s a deep, resonant baritone that effortlessly squeezes every bit of soul from every single note. When it flutters in vibrato, it’s about as delicate as it can be. When he flips into his falsetto, that deep baritone floats up and tip toes around the high notes.
His performance for Capital One House at Atone’s during SXSW was a revelation for me. It’s one thing to hear a singer’s voice on an album, it’s a totally different experience to hear that same voice in a live setting. I’ve decided that if you really want to get the full Jacob Banks experience, you have to hear his voice in person. You want that raw, live setting to help Jacob’s deep tones tickle the nerve endings in your ears. Luckily, for us state-side folks, Jacob will be touring the U.S. with Maggie Rogers in October for a string of dates. If he’s in your neck of the woods, I would recommend checking him out.
