Hollywood, CA- I had no idea who they were or what kind of music they played, but as soon as I saw them play one song live at The Viper Room, Mugen Hoso earned an instant fan. Simply put: They. Kicked. Ass.

From a purely musical perspective, Mugen Hoso pretty much plays punk rock straight up. Sonically, they take a more classic approach to the genre, but they infuse it with such an infectious energy when they play live that they really do make it all their own. Their allure is in their performance, and it is conducive to not only make you want to bop along with their licks, but also put a perma-grin on your face.

The duo (Hiro on guitar/vocals and Taro on drums/vocals) are punk rock energizer bunnies. Hiro jumps around the stage like a rabbit on speed, often making me fearful that he’ll accidentally slam his guitar on his face- or the face of an audience member- or break his ankles. He does all of this with a goofy smily on his face, and that only elevates the levels of joy that the audience is feeling while watching them perform.

They also took great efforts to involve the audience with their performance. Though their speaking English is just barely passable, they still were able to communicate exactly what they wanted the audience to do whether it was call and response (with a “Mugen Hoso Ichiban”) or simply expressing their gratitude for the audience enjoying their show.

Muge Hoso. Ichiban. And TONS of fun.
