ECHO PARK, CA- Lauren Ruth Ward‘s residency at the Echo/Echoplex was more than just a chance for her to flex her seemingly otherworldly talents. It was also an opportunity for a number her talented friends to showcase their music to an audience that they perhaps would not have had the chance to otherwise. Lauren is such a vibrant member of the local musical/arts community, it was almost no surprise to discover that her friends shine just as brightly as she does.

I missed some of their set because I was outside catching Slugs perform the first of their two sets, but The Years- unlike my photos- were pretty damn good.
I hadn’t heard their music prior to this evening, but their indie synth/pop/rock was spot on. Catchy and melodic, it was right up my ally, and I was honestly surprised that I hadn’t heard of them, or at least had one of my music buddies, forward me a link to their music.
From the sampling that I was able to get this evening, I was impressed with how clean their performance sound was. They didn’t sound like a “new” band. Rhythms punched in succinctly, vocal harmonies were in tune, and the overall vibe they gave the audience with their music- which was accentuated by the dark, pulsing/brooding lights- made for a performance that effused a subdued confidence that really piqued my curiosity.
I’m anxious to hear more from this band. Maybe next time, I’ll be able to catch a full set.
