ECHO PARK, CA- On December 2nd, 2017, the band HUNNY held their second annual “Winter Talent Show” at The Echoplex. With 7 diverse acts in the line-up, we knew it would be a good one. After a long day of performances by Ramonda Hammer, French Vanilla, Field Medic, King Shelter and Potty Mouth, the headliners of the talent show took the stage: HUNNY.
After a busy year touring around the country, part of which was used touring in support of their new EP “Windows I”, HUNNY took the stage to their adoring fans.
When I say adoring fans, I mean it. I got to the venue early to photograph the event, but before I could even get settled and ready to photograph the days events, two rows of their fans had already occupied the space where I would have normally setup. I’m usually very good at beating a crowd at a no photo pit venue, but I was no match for Hunny’s fans.
I enjoyed their performance. Their post-punk pop sonics were upbeat and easily danceable. Their front man, Jason Yarger, was decked out in a holiday red suit adorned with actual Christmas lights. As he sang the infectious melodies wearing Santa’s cap, he exuded a smooth swagger that had me kinda thinking of The Killers’ Brandon Flowers.
The high energy of their music was embodied in the high energy of their huge band. A five piece, each player occupied their own nook of the stage. While it would have been a bit more visually stimulating to see more inter-band interactions during the performance, their pop infused music certainly brightened the venue up with a little bit of holiday cheer.
