TRAP GIRL | HEX CODE | SPARE PART FOR BROKEN HEARTS
LOS ANGELES, CA-
“…Based on what I could glean from the interwebs, Hex Code emerged from the creative crucible of Long Beach, offering a fresh perspective on the dance-punk genre. As they have described themselves, they draw inspiration from early L.A. death rock and post-punk influences, the band crafts a sound that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Their lineup features Mary Animaux and Veronica Cruz sharing vocal duties, with Redd on drums and Lily Stretz on bass, creating a dynamic and multifaceted sonic experience.
At Alex’s Bar, Hex Code’s performance was a kinetic explosion of rhythm and melody. Their setlist, featuring tracks like “Parasite” and “Walk into It,” showcased their ability to blend haunting organ tones with driving guitar riffs, and reminiscent of… at least to me… the pioneering sounds of Kathleen Hanna. Think of Le Tigre if Le Tigre went down a darker road. That’s what my gut was telling me… and my gut was digging it. The dual vocals of Animaux and Cruz added depth and texture. I was entranced, and so was the audience, as bodies in the room bopped around in unison to the infectious grooves that Hex Code delivered with a fiery passion.
Hex Code’s artistry lies in their seamless fusion of past and present, paying homage to their musical forebears while carving out their own distinct identity. Their music invites listeners to both reflect and revel, offering a danceable yet introspective journey that lingers long after the final note…”
