Long Beach, CA- Heaven 17 is an English band that had a hand in carrying the new wave and synth-pop genres throughout the 80s. Two of original three members of the group still perform as Heaven 17, Martyn Ware (keyboards) and Glenn Gregory (vocals). Martyn was also a member of The Human League. It was mentioned to me by a peer that their performance at Music Tastes Good was rather surprising insofar as they apparently rarely perform in the United States.

Truth be told, I wasn’t too familiar with the group’s repertoire when I attended their performance at Music Tastes Good. In fact, I think the only song I actually knew was their hit “Temptation”; a recommendation by a friend during my Erasure days. (P.S. It took some digging on the internet to find this video link as the video is blocked on Youtube because of foreign restrictions)

But though I may not have been well versed in all that is and was Heaven 17, there were clearly fans of theirs in the audience who were. I saw people singing and dancing along with Martyn and Glenn, reliving their youth and getting lost in the music. Seeing that unfold was just further proof of the wonderfully eclectic line-up that Music Tastes Good is slowly becoming known for. And in this case, this selection brought an elusive little piece of new wave “Heaven” for the genre’s ardent fans.
