LOS ANGELES, CA- Half Waif is the solo project of Nandi Rose Plunkett. Nandi had previously spent a handful of years performing with the indie-rock, alt-country band Pinegrove, but during that time wrote her own music and explored her expressive synth pop sensibilities with Half Waif. With the help of several Pinegrove members, she has been touring in support of her sophmore EP “form/a” which was released in 2017.
Her music is moody and raw. The sonics alone draw from the listener a sense of empathy that is only strengthened when one listens to her emotionally revealing lyrics. She creates a dreamy mood that both soothes and creates a sense of earnest urgency (please note that the track embedded below is from her debut EP “Probable Depths”… I included it here because I particularly liked it)
There was something about the timbre of her voice that captured my attention. It was innately contemplative, making me want to concentrate on the emotions her face revealed as she sang. It was both ethereal and dramatic giving me an impression that this would be the kind of music that Enya would record if she were younger and was perhaps dealing with some heavy life events.
It was such a delicately wonderful performance, I didn’t want to disrupt anybody’s enjoyment of it while looking for my ticketed seat after I photographed her. I simply sat down on the carpeted floor of the theater, and let her music take me to an emotional place that I’m sure I’ll be hearing more of in the future.
