AUSTIN, TX- Bubblegum emo, a genre that seamlessly blends pop-infused rock, emo, indie, and garage-rock, has found its latest torchbearers in the Swedish trio Tribe Friday. Drawing influences from bands like My Chemical Romance, The Strokes, and Cage the Elephant, Tribe Friday brings a fresh and infectious energy to the genre, combining dark lyrical content with vibrant melodies and catchy hooks.
Formed in 2017, they have released a series of EPs, including “Trying Your Luck,” “Waiting For A Sign,” and “Chasing Pictures.” With each listen, I can hear their growth and evolution, and it keeps getting better with each drop. Their latest single, “Me and All My Friends” (released after SXSW… see… I still listen to them!), is a catchy, fun bop clocking in at just under 2 minutes. It’s so irresistible to me that I can’t help but click the “loop” button on Spotify to hear it a couple of times in a row.
Their live performance was equally fun. There was a party atmosphere on that stage, and it definitely made all of us unfamiliar with their sound want to bop around like Gen-Zers, even though we were a crowd that leaned a little closer to “old” than “young” (Robby Krieger was the headliner for the evening). Combining the energetic stage presence with roaring guitar solos, undeniably memorable choruses, and just a touch of youthful innocence, I see this upstart band really being able to connect with the U.S. market as long as they can find stages to perform on. They already completed a five-stop U.S. tour around SXSW, but hopefully, they’ll come to Los Angeles sooner rather than later.
