LOS ANGELES, CA- I was sixteen or seventeen, shipped off to a summer school on the East Coast—a kind of academic boot camp disguised as a cultural exchange. That’s where I first met kids who wore Doc Martens without irony and introduced me to music that felt a world apart from what was spinning on my local radio back home. One afternoon, sitting in a dorm room with a friend from New Jery … I think… I heard The Lemonheads for the first time. He handed me his Walkman- you remember those and let me listen to a mix he made. It was when I heard “Into Your Arms” play like a portal to a softer, more sincere universe.
Ever since, the band has lived in that hazy corner of my memory—equal parts youthful longing and jangle-pop perfection. So whenever a Lemonheads song randomly pop up in a random playlist I click on, it feels less like nostalgia and more like an old friend waving from across the years. Now, that friend is back—with something to say.
Evan Dando and company return with “Deep End” b/w “Sad Cinderella,” their first new material in years and a prelude to their upcoming full-length album Love Chant, expected Fall 2025 via Fire Records.
Produced by Apollo Nove and recorded in São Paulo, Brazil, the single boasts Dando’s unmistakable melodic instincts and sharp emotional textures. The A-side, “Deep End,” is a riff-heavy piece of power-pop featuring guitar work by Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis and backing vocals by long-time collaborator Juliana Hatfield. On the flip side, “Sad Cinderella” sees The Lemonheads offering a tender, bittersweet take on Townes Van Zandt’s lesser-known gem, with Dando trading vocals with Nashville’s own Erin Rae.
“It’s never been so painless making a video,” Dando shared about the São Paulo-shot visuals for “Deep End.” “Everyone working was really great. The endless sidewalk goes really well with the song.”
The accompanying music video, directed by Carlão Busato and Luigi Parisi, premieres today on YouTube and captures the song’s pulsing, poetic energy against a backdrop of Brazilian urban sprawl.
To mark this long-awaited return, The Lemonheads are heading back on the road. A series of shows in Australia and New Zealand—celebrating the 30th anniversaries of It’s A Shame About Ray and Come On Feel The Lemonheads—are already underway. The band will hit Europe and the UK this August, with North American tour dates to follow.
