Though she may now be Brooklyn-based, Lorely Rodriguez p/kl/a “Empress Of” is an L.A. native. Her performance at Club Bahia earlier this month headlining a Red Bull Sound Select “30 Days In LA” date served as a bit of a homecoming for her. With family and friends in the audience (apparently, I was standing next to her mother for a good portion of the show), Ms. Rodriguez confidently took her place behind her instruments and proceeded unleash a sonic barrage of her masterfully crafted, synthpop gems.
It takes a certain type of artist to captivate an audience all by herself. Empress Of is that artist. Without the support of a backing band, Empress Of is able to draw you in with her infectious rhythms and keep you close with her sensual, empowering lyrics. As the fog machines and sharp lighting set the mood, you find yourself uninhibited, shaking your hips with every drum clap or bass kick, as you watch Ms. Rodriguez dance and sing, with her large curly hair flowing behind her.
The club setting at Club Bahia was also a perfect venue for this particular performance. The intimate nature of the venue only accentuated the performance when Ms. Rodriguez would make small talk with the crowd, giving thanks for everyone making it out and sharing personal tidbits with the audience (apparently, her mother had made the outfit that she was rocking on stage). The venue also made me wonder whether the vibes would be the same in a venue 3-4 times its size. I suppose I’ll just have to go to another Empress Of show when she’s back in town to find out.
