With Unknown Mortal Orchestra scheduled to bring the dance vibes to the Santa Monica Pier later in the evening, Twilight Concerts scheduled an act to balance the anticipated fervor by scheduling Dre Babinski’s Steady Holiday as the opening act. While Dre is clearly capable of bringing excitement to the stage (after all, she has performed with bands like fun. and Fitz and the Tantrums), her own is music far gentler and sweeter than her peers.

Performing music from her most recent album, Under The Influence, Dre and her players wooed the Santa Monica Pier audience with her sweet voice, fuzzy guitars (played by Atlas Genius’ touring guitarist, Blake Straus) and lulling violin playing (by Ms. Babinski herself). The performance served as a notice as to why Coachella’s founder, Paul Tollett, had hand picked her to play at Coachella this year. Dre and her band even spiced things up with a well-played cover of Paul McCartney’s “Temporary Secretary”.

As the sun set into the ocean, perhaps the most charming part of Dre’s performance was when her band left the stage so that she could play a couple of songs solo. The innocence and fragility in her performance,  and the stark visual contrast of this petit woman in red on stage performing to a crowd of thousands, was captivating.  The audience watched in complete silence, respecting her musical journey, and all you could hear was her mellifluous voice and the ambient noise of the ocean.
