WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA—There’s something profoundly gratifying about witnessing an artist’s journey from humble beginnings to commanding a mainstage at a major festival. Such was the case with Doug Locke at this year’s Outloud Fest for WeHo Pride. Years ago, Locke was one of the first acts I ever booked at Madame Siam’s tiny basement stage in Hollywood. Seeing him evolve from those intimate performances to a full-fledged spectacle at Outloud Fest was a deeply moving “full circle” moment.
Locke’s set at Outloud Fest on the main stage was fabulous. A tour de force. His growth as an artist was evident in every meticulously planned detail. From the full band that backed him, the choreographed dancers, and the backup singers, to the multiple costume changes and even the dramatic inclusion of a whip, Locke maximized every second on that expansive stage. It was a performance designed to captivate and impress and succeeded on every front.
Opening his set with a high-energy number that immediately got the crowd moving, Locke showcased his ability to blend infectious pop hooks with a theatrical flair. His commanding stage presence was palpable, a testament to years of honing his craft. Executing intricate choreography, the dancers added a visual dynamism that perfectly complemented Locke’s vocal prowess.
Locke’s versatility shone through his seamless transitions between different styles and tempos. He delivered sultry R&B ballads with the same ease and confidence as he did upbeat, danceable anthems. Each costume change marked a new chapter in his performance, keeping the audience eagerly anticipating what would come next. Including a whip in one of his numbers was a bold move that added an edge to the performance, demonstrating Locke’s willingness to push boundaries and explore new artistic territories.
Beyond his stage presence and vocal talent, what truly impressed me was Locke’s ability to engage with his audience. His interactions felt personal and sincere, a testament to his grounded nature despite his rising star. Reconnecting with Locke after so many years and being able to hug him and wish him well was a poignant moment, underscoring the personal connections that often underpin professional relationships in the music industry.
Locke’s journey from Madame Siam to the mainstage at Outloud Fest is a testament not just to his talent but also to his perseverance and dedication to his craft. It’s a narrative of growth and evolution, marked by hard work and an unwavering commitment to artistic expression.
In the end, Doug Locke’s performance at Outloud Fest was a triumph, a testament to his journey as an artist and his ability to captivate and inspire. It was a proud moment not just for Locke but for all who have followed his career from the beginning. Watching him command the main stage was a reminder of the transformative power of music and the enduring impact of following one’s passion.
For those who have yet to experience Doug Locke live, his performances are not to be missed. He has a special show coming up at the legendary Troubadour on August 22nd. Ticket are AVAILABLE HERE. Check him out!
