Los Angeles, CA- On September 29, 2017 at the Bootleg Theater, singer songwriter, and all around rock star, Lauren Ruth Ward celebrated the released of debut album, “Well, Hell”.
To say that I’ve been at the edge of my seat waiting for “Well, Hell” to be released could be a bit of an understatement. Her performance at the Bootleg was not my first … nor second … nor third time seeing her live this year. This performance marked my fourth … FOURTH … time. There are only a handful of “local” artists that I’ve gone out of my way to make time for, and this one? She tops the list.
I almost wasn’t able to get into the show. Due to the overwhelming number of requests by various other publication outlets, Lauren herself had to ask fans through social media whether anybody had a ticket to spare. Thankfully, someone did.
When I got to the venue, I met the woman who possessed my golden ticket. I made pleasantries and introduced myself to her and her friends who had each travelled from various countries in Europe to follow Ms. Ward for a three night gig jaunt from San Diego to Los Angeles to Santa Ana, with a side trip to catch LP (Lauren’s fiancee) in Santa Barbara.
I was pretty amazed by these fans, and the kind of dedication they exhibited. One of them simply told me, in her broken English, “Lauren’s music gives me life,” and warned me that if I was going to be standing next to her during the show that I should prepare myself for her uninhibited dancing. I told the group that I wasn’t going to get in the way of any fan who had been waiting in line for hours to be inspired.
And that’s what this show was. Again. Inspired.
Backed by Eddie Rivera (lead guitar who co-wrote all of the songs on “Well, Hell”), Liv Slingerland (bass) and India Pascucci (drums), Lauren’s performance had all of the fire and passion that made me want to keep coming out over and over again to her shows. She’s a contemporary artist who easily conjures up the spirits of classic-rock gods past. On stage, she is a free spirited, unrestrained woman possessed who unabashedly gives of herself completely, and it is magic to watch unfold live.
She performed her new album in it’s entirety and sprinkled in a few “extras” performing a fun medley of covers (“Electric Avenue”, “Hard to Handle” & “I’m Every Woman”), inviting Deanna Passarella to jam on the guitar for a couple of songs and singing “Sheet Stains” with LP.
I’m really rooting for this one. I think that anybody who loves rock and roll will love Lauren Ruth Ward … and once you see her live? “Well, Hell” … you’ll be just as big a fan as I am.
