LONG BEACH, CA- The Costa Mesa based band Common Kings had a pretty good 2017. Their first full length album, “Lost In Paradise” was released and subsequently nominated for a Grammy award in the “Best Reggae Album” category (which award was won by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley’s “Stony Hill”). When listening to Common King’s music, you can hear its appeal. It’s a style of reggae that seamlessly melds a multitude of musical genres (pop, rock, soul) with its underlying reggae themes.
When researching a bit about the band, I discovered that though they are based out of Southern California, the members all hail from all over the world. From Hawaii to Samoa to Fiji and Tonga, their band is, like their music, a melding of different styles. I’d infer that it’s that diversity of different island cultures that makes their sound particularly unique and a reason why people are so drawn to it. There’s basically something for everybody. A universal and familiar sound.
Their performance at One Love was as feel good as their music. It was a perfect collection of reggae-pop sonics that served as the perfect soundtrack as the sun was starting is lazy dip in the west.
