San Bernardino, CA- Children of Bodom- Alexi Laiho (vocals, lead guitar), Janne Wirman (keyboards), Henkka Seppälä (bass), Jaska Raatikainen (drums) and Daniel Freyberg (rhythm guitar)- is an extreme metal band from Finland. With a career spanning twenty years and 9 studio albums, they are spending the end of 2017 celebrating the same on their “20 Years Down & Dirty” tour. Though the tour will wrap soon in Montreal in a few days, we were able to catch their mid afternoon set on the main stage at Ozzfest Meets Knotfest.
Focusing on the music from their first four albums, their set was an opportunity for long-time fans to enjoy some of the older, popular cuts that broke them in the United States and for Children of Bodom newbies to get acclimated to Finland’s most renowned (and best selling) band. With a big stadium-rock sound, I have the feeling that they may have left plenty of good impressions.
I enjoyed their set, but I certainly wouldn’t have minded a few more recent cuts and maybe a playful cover of some Kenny Loggins (“Danger Zone” was a digital bonus track for their 2015 album “I Worship Chaos”). My personal preferences notwithstanding, their heavily piercing sonics definitely got the juices flowing early at Ozzfest Meets Knotfest.
