AUSTIN, TX- My Levitation experience started Thursday night when I was able to catch a trio of bands playing. The Los Angeles-based four-piece psychedelic soul band Chicano Batman delighted the audience with their energetic set and another west coast act, Drab Majesty, consisting of Deb Demure and Mona D. Androgynous, brought their brand of experimental, electronic darkwave to the stage.
Boy Harsher was one of my favorite acts during Levitation, but I felt that they have offered a bit more visually. Their set was the best I’ve seen so far, but as soon as I moved from the front row, any mystique was gone as there wasn’t much provided beyond what you’d get playing their records.
I guess I’m trying to say that the experience doesn’t really resonate unless you’re extremely close to the stage; even taking into account their origins as an underground noise duo, the current visual presentation doesn’t seem like it has caught up to the size of the venues and audiences they’ve successfully cultivated. I was ecstatic when I was granted a photo pass by their tour manager the first time I saw them at Brooklyn’s Elsewhere in February of 2017 (I thought they were a German band!). I was experiencing an awful bout of food poisoning that made Elsewhere’s inclusive bathroom sort of a nightmare, but I managed to see half of their set and was upset to leave while pushing away the packed and uncooperative crowd at the front (I couldn’t afford to be throwing up on strangers, but maybe some deserved it).
As a sincere aficionado of the band, they’ve summed up all my little young goth aesthetic dreams in one sound. A party for the weird kids that the normies could also dance to (and it catches up to my thirties in the same way). Only posers would say they’re an industrial/coldwave/darkwave/goth-pop/synth-punk project. If anything they’re a cinematic electronic band and you should try to catch them and push your way up to the front every time.
