Echo Park, CA- “Echo Park Rising is a neighborhood event in it’s 7th year that focuses on the music, creativity, diversity and small businesses of Echo Park. There are multiple stages and activities throughout the weekend located on the main routes of Sunset Blvd, Glendale Blvd, Alvarado Avenue, Echo Park Avenue and beyond.” The joy I get from attending this annual, local musical showcase is twofold: (1) I get to see some local acts that have caught my eye rock for free and (2) I get to take fliers on certain bands to see/hear what they’re all about and hopefully add them to my list of local acts to keep and eye on.
When I saw this band take the Lost Knight Lot stage, I had no idea who they were or what to expect. The only description I could find about them- from their Facebook page and from the Echo Park Rising artist list- was that they were “Los Angeles Based Post Future Wave”. When they started to play, I could hear how that description made sense. Their music definitely had some new wave energy. I’d even go further to say that they had a little bit of prog rock sonics sprinkled on top.
I found out through a friend via my Instastory that the band’s frontman, Adrian, used to play base for Hannie El Khatib and currently plays for Airborne Toxic Event. But other than what my friends told me and what little I could find online, the band’s is still quite a mystery to me.
I was holding up on posting this entry cause I was hoping to get a listen to some of their new music (which they’ve indicated on Facebook was coming soon), but it hasn’t dropped yet. Looks like I’ll have to wait a little longer to really dive into their music.
UPDATE: As of this afternoon, Blackpaw premiered their debut single, “Debut”, on Soundcloud. Have a listen!
