LOS ANGELES, CA- At Anime Expo, seeing where you needed to go was not the same as being able to reach it. A booth could sit directly across the exhibition hall, its logo clearly visible above the crowd, while the space between you and it became a fifteen-minute obstacle course. A merchandise bag the size of a carry-on swung through one opening. Someone stopped for a cosplay photo in another. A line curved away from its booth, crossed a second line, and briefly became indistinguishable from both. Everyone behind it attempted the same complicated human detour without losing their friends.
Anyone who has tried to cross a packed convention hall knows the feeling of watching a destination remain stubbornly within sight while never seeming to get any closer. Still, the reason Anime Expo was so packed was obvious everywhere you looked: people genuinely wanted to be there.
There was a time when dedicating yourself to anime or gaming meant positioning yourself outside the cultural mainstream. Popular media often treated that level of enthusiasm as shorthand for social awkwardness because those interests still occupied the fringes of popular culture. That distinction has largely disappeared, and Anime Expo is one of the clearest places to see why.
Anime and gaming are no longer niche interests borrowing mainstream attention for a weekend. They are mainstream culture, complete with celebrity streamers, professional cosplayers, major entertainment companies, fashion collaborations, musicians, artists, and developers whose work reaches enormous audiences. They share the halls with fans who spent months sewing a costume and people who simply wanted to catch a trailer a day early. No one in that mix felt more legitimate than anyone else. The audience has expanded, the industries have grown, and the passion that was once treated as something to hide has become increasingly visible, social, and even aspirational.
These were once interests many people felt compelled to keep to themselves. Anime Expo gave them several enormous halls and then struggled to contain the response. A crowd this large cannot represent every anime or gaming fan, and greater visibility does not eliminate exclusion. But across the interactions I observed, there was noticeable room for different identities, body types, ages, and forms of self-expression.
I spent years working around the music industry before moving more deeply into anime and, increasingly, gaming coverage. I don’t say that to set up a criticism of music; plenty of people in that industry care deeply about what they do. But I noticed something at Anime Expo that I encounter less often on that side of entertainment: childlike excitement paired with genuine craftsmanship.
Too often, a music campaign is built around managing what people think they are seeing. At Anime Expo, the developers I spoke with kept steering conversations back to mechanics, not taglines, but the actual thing you pick up a controller and do. They wanted people to play. Creators talked about their characters like people they had spent years getting to know, not assets to be deployed across a release calendar. There is a specific look on a small team’s face during those first hours of finally showing strangers something they have spent years building in private: a volatile blend of immense pride and sheer panic.
