AUSTIN, TX- For every artist we decided to catch at SXSW, we decided to review each performance with our own version of “Five Ws and One H” answering the questions: 1) Who are they, 2) What kind of music do they play, 3) When did they play, 4) Where are they from, 5) Why did we decide to catch them play and 6), How was their performance.

WHO: Annabelle Chairlegs (Lindsey Mackin, Matt Schweinberg Derek Vaughan Nunez Strahan and Billy Wong).
WHAT: They classify their music as “gaudy” on their Facebook page, but its high energy garage rock that dips its toes in the punk, psychedelic and surf rock spheres all at the same time.
WHEN: The Sidewinder Inside hosted by The Loyalty Firm 3/13/17.
WHERE: Austin, Texas.
WHY: I asked some of my Texas based friends if there were any local bands that I should make an effort to see perform live. Two of them forwarded me a link to the song embedded below. Decision made.
HOW: There are tons venues, some official and some makeshift, at SXSW. Artists play as many stages as they can book, and sometimes a venue can add or detract from the performance. Catching Annabelle Chairlegs at The Sidewinder Inside was the perfect setting for me to catch them play.
While The Sidewinder’s outdoor stage can accommodate upwards of 300 people, inside is quite intimate and holds less than 100. On the tiny stage, with deep blue and purple dim lights cast upon them, Annabelle Chairlegs roared though an intense, high energy, set that got me to understand why my friends urged me to see them live.
In that intimate setting, with the crowd shoulder to shoulder and intently focused on the stage, you couldn’t help but see, and feel, the intensity that the band’s front-woman was projecting. Lindsey Mackin has an aura and attitude about her that gives the band a verifiable bad-assness, and being so close to the stage, you could see that attitude with every snarl and sneer she made as she sang through her band’s songs. I also enjoyed watching their guitarist, Matt Schweinberg, shred during the gig. It could have been partially because I was basically standing right in front of him for the set, but watching- and photographing- him under the blue house lights as his face and body contorted with every lick was too much fun.
The band is currently working on their next album, and I, for one, am keen on keeping up with their progress.
